What is the meaning of "EM" in the DRDP Framework?

Summary:

Learn what “EM” (Emerging to the Next Developmental Level) means in the DRDP framework and when to apply it during child assessment ratings.

What Does EM Mean?

In the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP), the notation “EM” stands for Emerging to the Next Developmental Level. It is used to describe a child who has mastered a developmental level and is beginning to show knowledge, skills, or behaviors associated with the next developmental level, though not yet consistently across all situations or settings.

When to Mark “EM”

You may mark Emerging (EM) when:

  • The child has mastered the current developmental level.

  • The child also demonstrates some skills or behaviors from the next level, but not consistently.

This indicates that the child is transitioning or emerging toward the next stage of development.

How to Mark “EM”

  1. First, mark the developmental level that the child has mastered.

  2. Then, check the “Emerging” option (if available) to indicate progress toward the next level.

Example:
If a child has mastered “Building” and is beginning to show behaviors described in “Integrating,” you would mark “Building” and also select “Emerging.”

Important Notes About Emerging

  • ✅ You may mark emerging for full-continuum measures with infants and toddlers if the child has mastered the last level that can be rated and is showing some behaviors in the next level.

  • 🚫 Do not mark emerging if the child has already mastered the highest level on a measure.

  • ℹ️ Marking Emerging does not change the child’s level of mastery rating—it simply provides additional context about their developmental progress.

In Summary

“EM” = Emerging to the Next Developmental Level
It highlights that the child is progressing beyond their mastered level and beginning to develop the next set of skills, even if not yet consistently.
